“The Catholic Church has a remarkable story to tell, that speaks to ourdeepest desires and makes life make sense. If we can tell that story better, lives will be transformed.”

-Kathryn Lopez, Director, Catholic Voices USA

“I think the role of the laity is to be engaged and knowledgeable and to show others the joyful, life-affirming nature of what the Church teaches,”

Catholic Voices in Florida

This past weekend I had the great pleasure of speaking on the HHS mandate at the Florida 2012 Respect Life Conference in Jacksonville, FL.  Bishop Thomas Olmstead of Phoenix gave a wonderful keynote highlighting the life of Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko, a martyr and hero of the Poland's Solidarity movement.

Folks in Florida are energized by their efforts to pass Amendment 6, which would limit the use of state taxpayer funds for abortion, and Amendment 8, which would eliminate discrimination against churches and religious social service providers by, in the words of constitutional scholar Rick Garnett, "[getting] rid [of] Florida's originally-anti-Catholic constitutional provisions banning "sectarian" institutions from receiving public funds, and [bringing] Florida law in line with the First Amendment."  Here's hoping they succeed.

Kim Daniels is director of Catholic Voices USA. She's an attorney whose practice has focused on religious liberty issues, particularly rights of conscience in health care. Kim and her husband have six school-age children and are active members of their parish in Bethesda, Maryland. She's a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Chicago Law School.
